FEMNET Launches African Women’s Journal – A Publication that documents African Women’s experiences during the African Women’s Decade 2010-2020.
The African Women‘s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) has officially launched the African’s Journal a signature publication of the organization that will document the experiences of African women during the African Women’s Decade (AWD) period (2010-2020). The publication was launched at a colourful ceremony held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi Kenya, by Ambassador Bruce Madete on behalf of Hon Samuel Poghisio the Minister of Information and Communication
Hon. Poghisio commended FEMNET for producing a journal that highlights issues of gender equality and Women’s empowerment. ‘The publication will contribute to the body of knowledge and information on gender and development issues in Kenya and Africa as whole because as the continent observes the African Women’s Decade 2010-2020, access to information will play a vital role in inspiring action and generating debate on the implementation of the decade’s objectives’, said Hon. Poghisio.
The Minister observed that the journal needs to be used to document progress in the formulation of various policies and laws that seek to bridge the gender gap and end discrimination, including the tangible results such as those evident in narrowing of the gender gap in primary school enrolment.
Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development Permanent Secretary Dr. James Nyikal noted that FEMNET has continued to be a key partner of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development through its various programmes in Africa, Kenya included.
He explained that the main objectives of the AWD 2010-2020 is to :
- Review and celebrate progress made toward gender equality.
- To facilitate women’s empowerment and to articulate concrete actions that should be taken; to accelerate momentum in implementation of all protocols and agreements that support gender equality and women empowerment in Africa.
